Winter in Russia. Each day dozens of tons of anti-slipping salt for roads are sprinkled over. Add radical temperature swings from -20 °C to +250 °C. Now you can imagine what influence all of that has on the brakes. You have to remember that your safety depends on their state. There are a few secrets of brake system maintenance important to know not only for professional car mechanics, but also for all the car owners.

Car services VBP specialize in brake systems maintenance for 15 years and in the meantime have resurrected thousands of cars. Unfortunately, even some car mechanics have no idea how to maintain caliper - an essential part of brake system - right.


Here are some tips on caliper maintenance:

Tip 1

Every time when you replace your brake pads, check calipers’ state. After 6 years of constant use manufacturers grease inevitably dries out and that causes brakes jamming.

As a result we have uneven wear out of brake pads, not regular stopping, reduction of the cars’ free coasting and increased fuel consumption. And even original brake pads won’t save the situation.

Tip 2

When you change brake pads ask your car mechanic to lubricate all caliper parts – guide pins, piston, non-working side of brake pads and their ends. Lubrication of guide pins and piston will prevent corrosion and will smoothen stopping of the car. Lubrication of non-working side of brake pads will prevent brakes screeching.

Tip 3

Pay attention to the text on the grease packing. For example, on the original packing there was a sign ANTI-QUIEISCH PASTE, what is translated as «anti-screeching paste». Although in russian it was translated as multipurpose grease that is applicable for all caliper parts. Surely, in Germany the distributor would have been fined severely for such violations.

Tip 4 , the most important one:

Use the right greases. Most effective are multipurpose greases with working temperature over +1000°C. They retain elasticity at 250°C, have high adhesion properties and efficiently eliminate the brakes screeching.

Unfortunately, some of the car mechanics still use lithologic and graphite greases, and they at brakes operating temperature 250°C melt out. When using synthetic lubricants, pay attention to their working temperature. If it is below 250 °C, you are guaranteed to get jammed guide pins after 6 months. Copper-containing pastes work well only on slow-moving surfaces, such as the ends of the brake pads.

Caliper grease MC-1600 manufactured in Russia shows excellent results. Quality statistics of this grease is the best, the number of returns during the warranty period due to lubrication failure was reduced to 0.1%.
